Picture, for a moment, the image of a stagehand. Do you see a cigar-smoking, older gentleman pushing a broom across the stage? This is often how a prop person is depicted in the movies or on the Broadway stage as part of a production. In reality, the property department, or “Props,” can be comprised of male or female, young or old. One thing that stays constant, though, is that these individuals are an integral component to the success of a production.
Props deal with items that the actors handle, such as firearms, candles, swords, flags…the list is endless. Because of the nature of the job, prop people have to be very detail-oriented. If a chair is not placed in just the right position, an actor could take an unintended pratfall. Nothing can raise the ire of the Prop person more than a carpenter or an electrician setting a coffee cup on the prop table. As a rule, the prop table is always off limits, only to be used for show props. |
