Behind the Scenes with IATSE Local 93 - Stagehands and Props

Picture, for a moment, the image of a stagehand. Do you see a cigar-smoking, older gentleman pushing a broom across the stage? This is often how a prop person is depicted in the movies or on the Broadway stage as part of a production. In reality, the property department, or “Props,” can be comprised of male or female, young or old. One thing that stays constant, though, is that these individuals are an integral component to the success of a production.

Props deal with items that the actors handle, such as firearms, candles, swords, flags…the list is endless. Because of the nature of the job, prop people have to be very detail-oriented. If a chair is not placed in just the right position, an actor could take an unintended pratfall. Nothing can raise the ire of the Prop person more than a carpenter or an electrician setting a coffee cup on the prop table. As a rule, the prop table is always off limits, only to be used for show props.

When the audience’s attention is drawn to a dramatic scene downstage, the prop crew is upstage clearing items from the previous scene. This is often done in darkness, but sometimes the crew is visible to the audience and is, therefore, placed in costume. During Les Miserables, the Prop crew is not only in costume, but they have to learn how to traverse the revolving stage while carrying heavy tables, chairs and other items.

Prop duties are much more diverse and varied than other departments. Some tasks include delivering items to the show office, setting up dressing rooms, arranging wardrobe crates, laying the floor covering, and setting up the orchestra pit. A good prop person will boost the morale of the entire crew; they are always in charge of cast and crew refreshments.

The prop department’s main focus during a production is to ensure that everyone involved in the production is able to do their job. Whether they are assisting other technical crews, management, musicians or actors, the main focus is to make the theatrical experience more enjoyable for everyone. You still may see an old guy with a cigar pushing a broom across the stage, but it is more likely to be an actor than a prop person. The prop crew sincerely hopes our efforts help make your Broadway experience a memorable one!
