In the House - Costumes!

National touring Broadway productions travel with almost everything required to provide a top quality performance. The tour travels with props, costumes, cast members, musicians, and almost all of the stage crew required. In order to complete the stage crew, every production requires a group of local professionals to work with the road crew. These professionals all live in the Spokane area, and are members of Local 93.

Stage crews are divided into various departments including electrical, carpentry, lighting, sound and wardrobe. The wardrobe department requires specialized skills in sewing, design and maintenance of costumes, footwear, hats and wigs. It also depends on the mundane skill of doing laundry for an army of performers.

For every performance, a large array of costumes and accessories will be laundered, ironed or steamed. Costumes will be mended or rebuilt and fitted to meet the needs of individual actors or actresses. Some costumes must look dirty or distressed, while others are starched and perfect. Every costume has been designed to display an expression and must be maintained for the life of a show.

Some costumes must look dirty or distressed, while others are starched and perfect.

Prior to each performance every member of the wardrobe staff will check and double check their area of responsibility to ensure that all costumes are in their proper place. It would not look good if the von Trapp children were missing their shoes, or Maria was without her apron.

After the show begins, performers require assistance with their costume changes. It is not unusual for an actor to change costumes 15 times in 2 hours while standing off-stage in the dark. Each wardrobe technician may be assigned to dress one lead performer, or a whole troupe of dancers.

Wardrobe technicians dress in black and stand off-stage during the performance, waiting, with clothes in hand, and a flashlight ready, to do what ever the performer may need. Sewing kits are kept close at hand for any necessary repairs during scene changes. Costumes are an integral part of the theater experience and professional wardrobe technicians play a key role in your enjoyment of any production.
